Alfred Bernard, III - Norfolk, VA Divorce - Trapani, Bernard & Lloyd, PLLC

Alfred Bernard has been a member of the Virginia Bar since graduation from the T.C. Williams School of Law in 1965. Prior to attending law school, Mr. Bernard received his B.A. from the University of Virginia.

As an outgrowth of his commercial practice, Mr. Bernard decided in the late 1970’s to join a business venture with retail stores across the southeast United States. Although he left the active practice of law, it never left him. While he enjoyed tremendous success, he missed the opportunity to help others and grew frustrated with the public’s perception of the legal profession. So, after much reflection, Mr. Bernard sold the business in 1990 and returned to the practice of law.

Mr. Bernard is quite candid about his reasons for returning to the legal profession: “I was embarrassed that the profession had become the butt of so much humor with lawyers too often being portrayed as dishonest, fee-grabbing persons. I hoped that if I returned to practicing law, the public would find at least on proficient lawyer who would behave in a civil manner and strive to help individuals resolve their business and personal difficulties.”

With his practice concentrated in Family Law, Business Dispute Litigation, Estate Planning, and a broad spectrum of Real Estate matters, Mr. Bernard’s practice has grown steadily since his active return to the profession. Mr. Bernard was asked several years ago to assist the Norfolk City Treasurer with the collection of delinquent taxes. He is not only quite successful at collecting money owed the City, but together with the Treasurer, has been able to help taxpayers with financial difficulties retain their properties and meet their financial obligation to the City.

Mr. Bernard describes the focus of his practice as follows: “The areas in which I practice typically involve situations where individuals need an objective viewpoint, as well as practical suggestions and applications for resolution.”
