Father's Day Eulogy

On this special father’s day, I share this eulogy with you. It was written by a friend upon the death of his firstborn. After several years of mourning, he and his lovely wife went on to parent two adopted sons. They keep Daniel’s memory alive in their hearts and joyfully embrace the life they now live.

Eulogy for Daniel

His name is Daniel and he is our son, my son
He has his fathers, my, dark handsome face
and his mothers long elegant body.
To us he is perfect, but sadly very distant.

Although our time to parent you was short
Daniel, my son, our love has no limitations and no reservations.

This baby danced with his mother for months
and then lay quietly listening to his fathers stories.
If he had the time to grow up amongst us
then he’d surely possess his mother’s spirit and my voice.
I will always think of him this way and celebrate the miracle of his life.

I cannot tell you my love, why this has happened
I have no answers.
But I swear before God and our community that my commitment
to you and Daniel will never fade or falter.
I could not love you more
or wish for a better mother for our children.
You continually amaze me, and strengthen me and I know
our dreams of parenthood have just begun.

To Max and Pauline, Jack and Molly and Ken.
I pass on to you the spirit of this child that I love.
Care for him the way you always did for me
Care for him the way you know I would have.

To our friends and family that are here and those that are not.

Please know that every act of kindness,
no matter how it is expressed
will never be forgotten.
But on this day, I ask that each of you
say a prayer for Daniel
and never ever forget that he was here
and that he is our firstborn, our son, my son.
