April Spring Cleaning

April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow…

- T.S. Eliot

I disagree with the esteemed poet T.S. Eliot's claim that “April is the cruelest month.” For most geographic locations, April is a complex month: one cold, wet day followed by another full of sun and sweat---truly, it is a time of rebirth. Most religions honor this holiday time with traditions, rituals, and special foods acknowledging renewal. In preparation, for the new season many of us also do our own version of spring cleaning. While we tend to think of spring cleaning as an act of cleansing our homes, it is also a good time to consider spring cleaning ourselves and our relationships.

Nature abhors a vacuum. As the cold barren ground of winter gives way to spring, the once white covered earth welcomes newly sprouted vegetation. Tree's roots reach just a little bit deeper and branches broadly stretch towards life. Thus, it can be with our own growth and the growth of those around us as we prune, reorganize and develop our relationships. But, how do we go about this process of spring cleaning ourselves and our relationships?

April Spring Cleaning List:

  1. Take time to reflect about where you are in your life. Are you angry, happy, sad, overwhelmed, depressed?

  2. Evaluate your own strengths and weaknesses.

  3. Decide what needs changing and make room for your own growth.

  4. Think about the people in your life. What changes need to be made? Is there anyone who should be asked in or tossed out?

  5. Think about how to make the changes you want?

  6. Do you need help tending to your relationship garden? If so, give yourself the gift of professional help.

  7. Is there anything significant you should say to someone close to you?

  8. If so, make the time to say it.

  9. Take responsibility for yourself and don't play the blame game.

  10. As you spring clean yourself and your relationships, leave space for forgiveness. It will make room in your relationship garden for love to grow.
