"More IRS Relief for the Terrorist Attacks"

-
Week of 9/24/01 -
The IRS has issued more details on its relief package. Here are the key points, as stated in its press release. The relief is indicated as “initial,” meaning more may be on the way.

  1. Relief is available to ANY taxpayer, regardless of where you live, if you were directly affected by the attacks. Included are relief workers, victims, taxpayers whose records were affected, and people employed in the disaster area.

  2. If you have a federal tax filing deadline (apparently of any type of return) between Sept 11 and November 30, 2001, you now have an additional six months, plus 120 days to file the return and make the payment. Taxpayers with extensions that expire in this period have an additional 120 days to file.

  3. Estimated tax payments due Sept 17 can postpone that payment by including that amount with the final estimated payment for 2001, due January 15, 2002. Corporate taxpayers with estimated payments due Sept 11-Jan 15 can postpone the payment until January 15, 2002.

  4. The IRS will suspend collection activities - seizures, levies, summonses, - for 6 months.

  5. Tax deposits of employment or excise taxes can't be extended, but IRS will waive penalties on deposits due between Sept 11 and October 31 if the deposits are made by November 15, 2001.

  6. The above is ONLY for taxpayers directly affected. If you are, put in RED INK on any documents: “SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 - TERRORIST ATTACK.”

  7. For more information, see irs.ustreas.gov/prod/news/n-01-61.pdf.
Good luck to all.
