"Your Big Tax Refund of 2001"

-
Week of 8/06/01 -
Getting ready for that big refund Congress just passed, are you? Ready to have a night on the town? Making plans to spend that $300-600?

What if it never arrives?

By now you should have received a letter from the IRS telling you (1) that you are getting a refund, and (2) about when you should expect it (July-Sept). First clue that something is wrong is if you did NOT get that letter. If that is the case, hop on the phone to 1-800-829-1040 and work your way through the phone tree to alert the IRS. Maybe they have your address wrong. Maybe your ex intercepted the letter. Maybe the dog ate it. No matter what, if you did not get the letter, that's a clue you may not get the refund.

Next, if you don't receive the actual check at the indicated time, don't wait. Get on the phone as above, or call the IRS' Office of Taxpayer Advocate and alert them. Their numbers are on the website, “irs.gov” or maybe even in the phone book. With 90 million checks going out, a few could get lost. Or maybe your state intercepted your refund for child support. Or the IRS took it for back taxes. Reasons for a lapse like this abound; just don't sit around when it happens.

Finally, if you get MORE than you're entitled to, say $6,000,000 instead of $600, don't think you've won the lottery. Get on the phone and even go to your local IRS office. Why? Because the IRS has the right to charge you INTEREST on that money until you pay it back. If they don't, it's because you were diligent in alerting them to the problem.

Other questions or glitches? Call the Taxpayer Advocate's office. Good luck. And don't spend it all in one place.
