The
IRS has launched a new service that should prove to be of significant benefit to small businesses and self-employed individuals. It is accessible through the IRS' website, irs.gov, then link to “Small Business and Self-Employed Community.” Or click on “Preview Our New Look” on the irs.gov page, then click on “small business” or “self-employed.”
The site is a product of the new Small Business/Self-Employed Division, one of the four major new operating divisions that came on line this year and last. What promises to make this site useful is its centrality: so much linkage for so few clicks. For example, according to an IRS publication, the site will answer many basic tax questions, provide links to IRS forms, give industry-specific information for certain industries such as construction, restaurants. It will also advise how to avoid tax pitfalls, provide links to small business resources, court cases, non-IRS sites for general tax information, and even to state sites for state-specific information. As an example, one can imagine a contractor doing business in three contiguous states. He is unsure of what items are subject to sales tax, and the rules may differ from state to state. At the same time, he has questions about federal tax reporting. The site will be a central information switchpoint for these questions. These days, with so much information on the Net, and with the IRS' own excellent website, it's nice to know the Service is addressing the 50 million or so small business/self-employed individuals with some additional, quality resources. |
