If the IRS does not have your current address, does this help or hurt you? Mostly, it hurts. You could miss a refund; notices of past-due taxes that go into the trash only result in more penalties and interest. For divorcing couples, where one spouse is not living at the last “known address,” these and other problems arise.
Now, the IRS is teaming up with the Postal Service to solve the problem, or at least make a big dent in it. The IRS will get the Postal Service's database of address changes and use this to update its records. Since most people who move use the Postal address change forms, that's a great way to keep up to date. The Postal database is updated weekly, a big help to the IRS. You still have two other ways to let the agency know you have moved. One is to file a new tax return. But that's a yearly thing (we hope), therefore slow. The other is to file a change of address form, Form 8822. The IRS inputs that one almost immediately, but many people simply don't use this form. In any case, don't rely on the Postal Service update unless you KNOW the IRS has your new address. The burden is still on you, not the IRS, to keep the agency informed. |
