The IRS' oversight board, created three years ago, has published some fascinating statistics on what we Americans think of cheating on taxes and other interesting topics. According to Commerce Clearing House, which reported the findings, here are the highlights:
Prompted by answers as above, the IRS Oversight Board criticized the IRS for poor customer service. It cited such factors as inadequate telephone assistance, obsolete computer systems and a decline in enforcement activity. As you prepare your 2001 taxes, is the above of some comfort to you? Remember that the tax system is legally compulsory but practically voluntary. It depends on a shared legitimacy that people are fairly treated - by the IRS AND by their fellow citizens, not to mention the federal government. Despite the pessimistic report noted above, agents still try to do their best. Remember that the IRS can only do what Congress lets it or tells it to do, and only with the tools Congress grants. |
