Bio:
Marthy Harty, Ph.D., directs research and development at
the Heartwood
Institute, which promotes ethical understanding
and
practice through
literature-based curriculums for children. She also teaches
as an Adjunct Senior Lecturer for the CMU
Philosophy Department's Applied
Ethics Center. She mediates regularly for the Pittsburgh
Mediation Center and provides mediation, facilitation,
and conflict consulting
services for private clients, specializing in family and
divorce. She received her Ph.D. in 1988 from the University
of Pittsburgh
and her B.A. in 1978 from Bryn Mawr College.
Harty's main
interest is management of human conflict. The search for solutions
to conflict has led her to learn
and
practice mediation,
to study cultural differences and to develop tools for
teaching people to handle conflict and relationships
in constructive
and ethical
ways. She has produced two interactive CD-ROMs, Allwyn
Hall and In All Respects, as well as articles,
training materials,
videos
and
websites dealing with conflict resolution, diversity
and ethics education. More
information about her work in mediation and
ethics, including
her CDs, is available here.
