the mediation
process, gather initial information and determine whether this
approach will work for you. Call today!
Why
Mediate?: For yourself: The conventional approach to divorce only adds
to the emotional pain of the changes you are going through.
Do yourself a favor by using a process that respects and empowers
you to get your needs met while laying the foundations of a civil
and workable future relationship with your ex-spouse. For
your kids: A non-adversarial process is even more important
when you have children
you will continue to co-parent. Study after study has shown that
mediating child custody issues is better for everyone. For
your finances: Lynn Brenner, writing in the March 27, 2004
issue of Parade magazine,
describes a “standard divorce” as taking 170 hours
and costing between $15,000 - $20,000, whereas a mediated divorce
typically
requires about 20 hours and costs between $4,000 - $5,000, including
legal consultation fees.
Approach:
Marthy Harty's approach to mediation draws on elements of applied
ethics, interest-based negotiation, and transformative mediation.
It is based on more than a decade of mediation experience,
skills training and research. The approach is founded on
respect, the
basic value needed to enable resolution of disputes through
discussion. In this approach, the mediator represents and
advocates for respect
and other values of the parties. She shows respect through
listening, reflecting and following parties' preferences
throughout the
process.
Credentials:
Harty became a court-certified mediator in January 1990 under
the auspices of the Pittsburgh
Mediation Center. She has
mediated more
than 50 cases, including family and divorce, community, small
business, and multi-party cases. She has developed trainings
and trained thousands
of people in conflict resolution, mediation and facilitation
skills. She has received over 100 hours of training in mediation,
facilitation
and cultural diversity. Her specialized training includes
divorce and family mediation, parent-teen mediation, cross-cultural
mediation, victim-offender mediation, environmental mediation
and transformative
mediation. Harty is a Practitioner/Educator/Researcher member
of the Association for Conflict Resolution Family Section. More.
