How do I get a Collaborative Law Divorce Started?

  1. Inform yourself.

Learn all you can about Collaborative Law. Read articles. Search the Web. Find out who practices Collaborative Law in your vicinity.

  2. Find the best Collaborative Law practitioner you can.

Interview several. Ask for a resume. Find out how many Collaborative Law cases the lawyer has done, and how many terminated without agreements. Ask what training the lawyer has in Collaborative Law, alternate dispute resolution, and conflict management.

  3. Talk with your partner or spouse.

Share information. See whether s/he shares your commitment to collaborative conflict resolution.

  4. Encourage your partner or spouse to select counsel who works well with your attorney.

Lawyers who trust one another and have a good track record of settling cases together are the best predictor of success in dispute resolution.

  5. Get started.

Ask your attorney to get the Collaborative Law process moving.
