I took DS6 for an Occupational Therapy evaluation on Wednesday. The OT said that his fine motor skills are below average for his age and suggested that he begin aggressive OT as soon as possible. She also said that he has trunk weakness and weakness in his hip and referred him for a Physical Therapy evaluation. Today Children's Healthcare of Atlanta called to tell me that insurance denied the PT evaluation and also OT sessions. They are covering the OT eval (minus my deductible... thank god!). I'm lost though. I went to the guidance counselor at the school right away and told her that we had no choice and that he had to get OT services through school. This was already in the works, but it was going to be a combination of OT in school and in a private practice. Now it looks like he won't be getting any PT and only minimal OT. Oh yeah, the insurance denied it because it's considered a developmental delay. DS was a preemie, and they are relating it to that it just hadn't really manifested until now. Well at least not to the point that teachers noticed anything.

What can I do from here? How do I get him these services? I have some exercises and things we can do at home. DS started gymnastics 2 weeks ago and will continue in that. I just don't know what else to do. I'm just feeling really helpless right now and am so mad that my DS needs these services and insurance refuses to pay for them and I just do not have the money to pay for them out of pocket.

Anyone else ever dealt with this??

Kimi - sometimes there are services available from the state or local government. When my son was very little - he never spoke a word. His sister (2 years older than him) spoke for him, pretty much constantly.

Out of fear, I took him in for testing. He wasn't deaf, and when they tested with books, he came out on the high side - he just didn't speak. Basically, he kept mum until age 4, then I couldn't stop him from talking. We were able to use county resources for deaf kids. You should scope out other websites that might be specifically tuned to your child's needs. They'd have the best advice.

I posted this message on all the boards that i'm pretty active on. I heard back from the children's hospital and they are resubmitting it to the insurance. The OT from school that I talked to said that almost always they deny the therapy on the first try because it's so expensive. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will get covered. I've looked up some other organizations just in case though. Thanks Tali smile

My youngest was like Tali's: He did not speak, and hardly walked, until a bit over 4YO. The doctors told us he needed special services due to being so far 'behind'. Then, like Tali's son, he started talking at a little over 4. Mine also tested high in reading at 5.

I don't know where to find help, because my son finally started talking and walking....
Best wishes on findingsome great help!!! I am sure he will be just fine!
