My friend got married 11 years ago and left her husband a month after their son was born. She never filed for divorce and she isn't sure if he did either. How would she got about filing for divorce without knowing where he is living?

She should start by searching. As Skipp will tell you if you post in the PI forum, given basic information she should have, such as SS#, birthdate, full name, previous addresses, any competent PI should be able to come up with a current address unless the guy is just completely off the grid.
If he really is completely unable to be located, there are steps mandated by the court such as posting ads in newspapers, attempting to serve at last known address, etc, and if those are completed and he still can't be located and/or served, she may be able to get a default divorce. She should be prepared to show that she made reasonable efforts to locate him. I would start with a cheap internet background, and if that's fruitless, try a P.I. I think Skipp normally advises going directly to a P.I. because a lot of the information turned up by the internet background searches is outdated.
