I hope someone checks this and can help provide some information. My STBX and I went through "We The People" forms preparation service to prepare our divorce paperwork. At the time, we were amicable and the division of property seemed very reasonable. In the terms of the divorce, I asked to have my maiden name reinstated. My questions are these. Since the papers were already signed, I appeared in front of the judge solo and answered all of his questions. He signed it and filed it. But it is not final yet, right? The judge said that we could not marry others for 6 months, by state law. Will it be final 6 months from the day he signed it (which would be November 7)? Also, when can I begin using my maiden name again? And last, how do I go about separating his credit report from mine? Can I contact each credit reporting agency? Is that something that has to wait 6 months also? Thanks in advance for any information you can provide. I'm feeling sort of lost.

In not in NE, but it's probably the case that your divorce is final, but you're still prohibited from marrying (we have a similar statute in TX, but it's like 30 or 60 days). That may be something designed to give people time to appeal, or it may be something designed to discourage adultery - who knows.

I think it is considered final the day the judge signs it but you just can't marry for 6 months.
