I have a couple questions. I have been divorced for 10 years now. I have paid child support for my 2 kids in this time frame. The oldest just turned 21 and is in a 4 year college. The X wife and I have paid all of her 2 year degree and now that she's in the 4 year college, my X thinks I should still be on the hook for the next 2 years. I have no problem with some of the school tuition but all the other items ( I.E. Apartment, food etc.), I feel that my daughter should help contribute. My wife throws the divorce decree in my face all the time. When does the "financial help" for a 21 year old end? I pay for her health insurance and have paid all the child support until age 18. Just don't want to be intimidated by a divorce decree each time I want to pay what I think is reasonable, which is paying some (but not all) of her school loan. How long can a divorce decree "last"? What if my daughter wants to go further with education? Can this last for "years?" Thanks for any help.

The provisions in the divorce decree can be eternal. You have to look at the specific provisions that address education and various forms of support, and read them carefully. What does it tell you, specifically, that you must provide? Keep in mind that state law may matter in some of this, but usually what you care about is the exact wording of your decree.

Thanks....I guess it's time to dust off the decree. I know it does state that both parents would "help" or "contribute" (not sure of the correct wording) to the children education (college). I have no problem "helping" out here and there but I think the X is looking for 1/2 of all cost.
