I have just been served divorce papers and am looking for an attorney. Can you help with what a fee could be? I have heard 150 an hour. That seemd a little high to me. But I dont know rates. Help please!!

I talked with a lawyer in Northwest Iowa and his fee was $2000 retainer and $125/hr after that.

I am in another state which is probably more expensive (mass) but I just spent a full week interviewing lawyers for post divorce modifications. Lawyers here with less than 6 years experience generally charge 150 per hour and lawyers with 7-15 years experience charge 250 per hour and it gets more expensive up to 400 per hour for lawyers with upwards of 20 years experience. However, I suggest don't choose a lawyer based on price. I interviewed a few in each price range and you can get the feel for them during the interview what kind of representation you'll get. If they try and rush you out the door without caring about much info about your case or asking questions and giving honest answers of their expected outcome - run. It's better to pay more for good representation than waste thousands on something that you get screwed on and will have to live with for the rest of your life.

I started out with mediation. That ran $100 per hour PER PERSON! Not cheap by any means. I do court transcriptions. I had done several transcripts for one female attorney who seemed like a ball breaker. I always thought that she would be the one I would contact in a time of need. She charges $300 an hour with no free consultation. BTW I'm in Maryland. Good luck.
